On the evening of 5th October 2011, Breast Awareness health talk was held in Little Yang Sing Restaurant. Elinor Taylor and Marger from Breast Cancer Care were invited to present the talk in English and our centre’s manager Shirley He, interpreted for the audience. Elinor and Marge said that we should understand our normal breast changes for example before a period, our breasts change constantly so we should understand what is normal for us. They emphasized to look and feel for any changes of the breasts, e.g. any lumps, nipple changes its position or shape, discharge from nipples etc. They also explained the importance of eating a well-balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, doing regular exercise and attend the Breast Screening Programme which may help us to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Overall 19 people (16 females and 3 males) attended the talk.
On the evening of 28th September 2011, Kidney Stones & Surgeries health talk was held in Little Yang Sing Restaurant. Dr. Way Man Chow, Consultant of Urology was invited to present the talk in Cantonese. The aim of the health talk is to raise awareness of kidney stones and surgeries to the community members. He explained in great detail in the causes, the sign and symptoms, treatment and prevention of kidney stones. This also gave the audience an opportunity to ask questions and get satisfying answers. Overall 27 people attended.
On the evening of 9th September 2011, a ‘Tuberculosis Awareness’ health talk was held in Little Yang Sing Restaurant. Shirley He, the Nurse Operational Manager of Chinese Health Information Centre presented the talk in Cantonese. She explained in great detail the signs and symptoms, causes, prevention, treatment, consequences and various types of tuberculosis. This talk was to raise awareness of tuberculosis among the Chinese population. She highlighted it is one of the current health issues and that the incidence rate of tuberculosis has increased particularly among the ethnic minority groups. Overall 23 people attended the talk.
The diabetes health talk was given in Cantonese by Shirley He, Nurse Operations Manager of CHIC at the Health Carnival at Sheung Lok in the Wai Yin Chinese Women Society.
Shirley explained the signs and symptom, treatments and preventions of diabetes. Healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and health diet were promoted. Of the 15 people attending the talk.
On 19th July 2011, Chinese Health Information Centre (CHIC) was invited to deliver two health promotion talks involving Osteoporosis and Stroke Awareness to the members of the International Chinese Buddhist Society during the ‘The Birth of the Goddess of Mercy’ celebration. Shirley He, the Nurse Operational Manager delivered the talk in Cantonese. She explained the sign of symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and stroke. Regular exercise, balanced diet was promoted. She also explained the importance signs of stroke including, observing the face if a person can smile, lifting the arms, if a person is suspected to have a stroke, do not waste time, call 999 immediately. The health talk attracted 41 people.
