Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease

‘Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease’ on 25-10-2010 Total attendees : 30 Venue – CHIC

On the 25th October 2010, a health talk was held in Chinese Health Information Centre (CHIC). Shirley He, the Nurse Operational Manager gave a detailed presentation about ‘Prevention of Coronary of Heart Disease’ in Cantonese. Information of the signs of symptoms, causes, the treatment and prevention of coronary heart disease were provided. She encouraged the audience to do more exercise and stressed that they should avoid foods that contain high sugar, fat and salt content.

In total 30 people attended the health talk. The majority (21, 75%) of the people who attended the event were in the age of 65 and over. 5 (18%) people are in the 55-64 age group and 2 (7%) did not disclose their age.

2010 World Metal Health Day

In response to October 2010 WMHD, CHIC organized 2 separate workshops to raise awareness about Anxiety and Stress on 4th October and Sleep problems on 6th October 2010. Shirley He, Nurse Operations Manager of CHIC facilitated the both workshops in the form of group works and discussion. Participants were asked to share of their views as to the causes and symptoms of anxiety and sleep problems, and solutions were suggested to manage these issues. The self-guide booklets on Anxiety and Stress, and on Sleep Problems, which are both produced by NHS Manchester PCT were used to help explain help how to self-help to manage these problems. The general feedback from the participants was very good; in particularly, there was a lot of involvement and interaction in the Sleep Problems Workshop. In total over 42 people took part in the two workshops.

On 6th October 2010 at Insomnia Workshop held at Wu Kau Tang Overseas Chinese Association. In total 24 people attended.

Anxiety and Stress

Diabetes Engagement Event

On Wednesday, 29th September 2010 CHIC assisted in facilitating a Diabetes Engagement Event at the Wu Kau Tang Overseas Chinese Association. Sandra Stronach, Engagement Manager from Manchester NHS conducted the event in English and Shirley He (Nurse Operations Manager) from CHIC provided

instant interpreting. The main aim was to obtain Chinese people with diabetes their views about their diabetes care from local hospitals and GP service, so that services and needs can be identified and improved. The group expressed their priority of need is to make interpreting service available for all health and social care in particularly to make interpreting service available for local opticians and dentist appointment. To reduce hospital appointment time was another issue to look into. However, the follow up diabetes care service both in hospital and GP were very much appreciated by the group. In total 17 people took part.
